How people have made meaning of leaving, what they valued, how they practised it and what they built for it, from the first rites of passage to a projected future.
Across history, people have made leaving mean something, weighed what it was worth, practised it together and built for it: the seclusion lodge, the processional way, the pilgrim road, the harbour quay, the departure hall. Each gave form to a threshold that mattered because it was rare, risky or irreversible. Each time departure became frequent, safe and technical, the rite shrank and the form was handed to the machine. Procession became processing, and the cathedral became the non-place.
The launch complex is the extreme case of this history. It serves the most irreversible departure humans make, it was engineered almost entirely around the vehicle, and it is becoming routine now.
Central question
As leaving the Earth becomes routine, where does the meaning of departure move, and how can the launch complex give it form?
Framework
The map, read with the seven cases placed on it.
The whole study faded behind. Each case sits in the layers where it gives the meaning of departure a place, at the time it was made, and is marked hollow where it holds that meaning back.

Framework
What carries into the routine future.
Three practices repeat to this day: the rebuilding at Ise, Gagarin’s day at Baikonur, the walkout at Kennedy. The thesis takes the route from Babylon, the honest account from the Vietnam Veterans Memorial and the Space Mirror, and the route cut into the land at Spaceport America. It guards against the hall that became a process, from the TWA Flight Center to Roissy.
Finding 1 · before the heroic age
Form carries the rite.
The seclusion lodge, the processional way, the pilgrim road, the quay: the forms on the map carry the rite of leaving. At Babylon the route is the rite; at Ise the shrine is rebuilt every twenty years.
Finding 2 · from the heroic age
Form goes to the vehicle, and the meaning moves to ritual and testimony.
Launch Complex 39 was built for the vehicle. The meaning survives in ritual repeated every launch, at Baikonur and Kennedy, and in testimony to the risk, at the Vietnam Veterans Memorial and the Space Mirror. The one hall built for the departure itself became a process within a generation.
